"Why School Dress Codes Fail" was a project inspired by watching my two daughters navigate an uneven, unpredictable part of school life that put attention where they least wanted it: on their bodies. They saw some girls singled out and shamed for wearing clothing that other girls got away with wearing because those outfits looked different on them.

And it doesn't just happen to girls of course. It's a fundamentally arbitrary and therefore inherently unfair system -- for students and staff, who did not sign up for policing hemlines and hairstyles.

Despite good intentions, dress codes mean "getting coded" to most students, which in itself is a kind of code -- for who's acceptable and who's not.

I wanted to try to define the problem from the perspective of both students and staff, and find out if there are any workable solutions. Turns out, there are!

Just take a look.
